How month-end dates are handled

Adding months keeps the same day of the month. When that day does not exist, the result moves to the last day of the month, the same rule used by Excel’s EDATE and many billing systems:

Jan 31, 2027 + 1 monthSun, Feb 28, 2027
Mar 31, 2027 − 1 monthSun, Feb 28, 2027
Aug 31, 2027 + 1 monthThu, Sep 30, 2027
Feb 29, 2028 + 1 yearWed, Feb 28, 2029
Jan 31, 2028 + 1 month (leap year)Tue, Feb 29, 2028

One consequence: adding one month and then subtracting one month does not always return you to the start date. January 31 plus a month is February 28, and February 28 minus a month is January 28.

Common uses

  • Payment terms: an invoice dated today with Net 30 terms is due Thursday, November 5, 2026. See also 30 days from today.
  • Notice periods: subtract days or weeks from a leaving date to find when to hand in notice.
  • Pregnancy due dates: doctors traditionally add 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of the last period for an estimate. Always confirm with your healthcare provider.
  • Warranties, returns and trials: add 30 days, 90 days or 1 year to a purchase or sign-up date.
  • Contracts and leases: add months rather than days when the contract is written in months.

Adding dates in Excel and Google Sheets

  • Add days: =A2+30 (or =A2-30 to subtract).
  • Add months: =EDATE(A2,3). Use a negative number to subtract.
  • Add business days: =WORKDAY(A2,10,H2:H12), where H2:H12 lists holidays to skip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add days to a date?

Choose a start date, keep “Add” selected, enter the number and pick the unit: days, weeks, months or years. The new date shows instantly.

What happens when I add a month to January 31?

February has no 31st, so the calculator uses the last day of February: the 28th, or the 29th in a leap year. The same rule applies to any month-end date.

Is adding 30 days the same as adding a month?

No. Adding a month keeps the day of the month where possible (March 15 to April 15), while adding 30 days lands on a different day whenever the month has 31, 28 or 29 days.

Can I subtract business days?

Yes. Set the unit to Days, choose “Subtract” and tick “Business days only”. Weekends are skipped when counting backwards. For US federal holidays, use the business days calculator.

How do I add months to a date in Excel?

Use =EDATE(A2,3) to add three months. Like this calculator, it moves to the last day of the month when the day does not exist. Add days with =A2+30 and business days with =WORKDAY(A2,10).
