Months versus days

A calendar month keeps the date and changes the month, so its length depends on where you start: from today, one month is 31 days and six months is 182 days. Rules written in days count every day instead. That is why 3 months from today (Sat, Jan 9, 2027) and 90 days from today (Thu, Jan 7, 2027) are not always the same date. Month-end dates

When you start on the 29th, 30th or 31st, some months have no matching date. The usual rule, used by banks, card issuers and most leases, is to land on the last day of the shorter month: one month after January 31 is February 28 (29 in a leap year), and six months after August 31 is the last day of February. A few contracts define a month as 30 days instead, so read the wording when money depends on it.

Months versus weeks

Four weeks is 28 days, two or three days shorter than most months, so plans written in weeks drift away from month dates. Pregnancy, FMLA leave and notice periods are usually counted in weeks; leases, subscriptions and warranties in months. For weeks, use the weeks from today calculator.
