Julian date: two different meanings
“Julian date” is used for two unrelated numbers, so check which one a form or label wants:
- Ordinal date (YYDDD). The year followed by the day of the year, padded to three digits. Today is 26279 (or 2026279 with a four-digit year). This is the form used on US military paperwork and supply labels, in manufacturing lot codes, and on food packaging. Some packers shorten it to four digits, YDDD, which makes today 6279; MRE rations are a well-known example.
- Astronomical Julian Day. A running count of days since noon UTC on January 1, 4713 BC, used in astronomy and some software. At midnight UTC today it is 2461319.5, and it becomes 2461320 at noon UTC. The Modified Julian Date, which starts at midnight, is 61319.
Neither has anything to do with the Julian calendar, the calendar used before the Gregorian calendar, which today runs 13 days behind.
Day numbers for each month
Find the 1st of the month in the table and add the date minus one. For example, March 15 in a common year is day 60 + 14 = 74. 2026 is not a leap year, so it has 365 days. In a leap year (the next is 2028), every date from March 1 on is one day number higher.

Week numbers
Today is in ISO week 41. ISO weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains the year’s first Thursday, so January 1–3 can belong to the last week of the previous year. US calendars and Excel’s default WEEKNUM start weeks on Sunday and count January 1 as week 1, so the two numbers can differ by one. How do I calculate the day of the year in Excel or Google Sheets?
With a date in cell A1, use =A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,0). DATE(year,1,0) is December 31 of the year before, so subtracting it leaves the day number. Format the result as a number, not a date.
How many days are in a year?
